What’s a
PHR? What’s the
Patient/Provider/Practice benefit? What’s the
Patient benefit ? What’s the
COST? What’s the Primary Technologies
Recommendation?
The Personal Health Record (PHR), is an electronic copy of all the patient’s medical records in one place, owned and controlled by the patient
(secure Internet or on a hard drive or on a portable storage unit). This makes the vital info available ……..wherever, whenever, but under the patient’s control. So, when out of town, wrong hospital, new doctor, emergency, etc…….the patient isn’t responsible for understanding or remembering vital information.
Patient/Provider/Practice benefit: Patients have new choices now. The PHR is sometimes offered and subsidized by insurance companies. PHR costs can be paid to the Vendor who pays a commission to the practice, thus sharing the cost of PHR production and maintenance. The fact that the patient has control of the MIM is both new and exciting.
Cost:
Variation in cost to the patient is dependent on practice policy, vendor, and the amount of stored information (file size). For example we would expect the entire PHR (IM, Ob/Gyn, FP, Meds, insurance info, etc) or the composite data for an entire family to be of greater than normal expense. Our research shows a wide range of costs including FREE, purchase or subscription.
Primary Technologies’
Recommendation:
The Primary Technologies preference list reflects our experience with the vendor, the vendor’s length of service, ease of use, product flexibility, etc
